Maneka Gandhi (Delhi, 1956) is the Indian Union Cabinet Minister for Women & Child Development. She is environmentalist and throughout her career she has distinguished herself as an animal rights and nature protection activist.
Her defense of the environment has earned her numerous international awards. In 1995 she was appointed chairwoman of the Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals. Three years earlier, in 1992, she founded the organization People For Animals, the largest association for animal rights in India. On the behavior of human beings, Maneka Gandhi once reflected: "We are so close to the red line, we may wake up tomorrow and discover there is nothing left to save."
