The environment encompasses all living and non-living things on Earth or in any region thereof, and all of their interactions. It also includes all of the factors that impact survival, development and evolution of every species. These factors may be natural, such as light, temperature, water and nutrients in the soil, or they can be caused by humans.
Ecosystems are the entire assemblage of plants, animals and micro-organisms in a specific area which function together with the environment's inert physical factors. At the heart of the ecosystem concept is that living organisms continuously interact with the other elements in their environment.
Deterioration of the environment requires that we take responsibility for environmental pollution and work to offset its effects. Protecting the environment is our duty, as we must ensure our survival and that of all living beings on the planet. Preserving the environment guarantees our future on Earth.
Some of the actions we can take to protect the environment include:
Encouraging energy saving and efficiency.
Developing renewable energy sources.
Preserving natural resources and using them in a sustainable way.
Protecting the biosphere.
Preserving species that are threatened and at risk of extinction.
